We had a gorgeous sunny day and a great turnout for our tour of a wind farm and electric car conversion company in Spanish Fork on Saturday March 29.

The Spanish Fork Wind Farm was our first stop. Homer was a funny and knowledgeable tour guide. He told the adventurous story of the nine blades for the wind towers at the site. The blades were initially made in India and damaged in transit, then reordered from a US supplier with other delays. The first tower has now been completed, and we crawled around (and in) its base.

Our next stop was a nearby sandwich shop, where we heard from Gordon Larsen of Questar and Robin Erickson of Utah Clean Cities. Many of us traveled in two Questar CNG (compressed natural gas) vans, thanks to Robin and Questar. Utah has the cheapest CNG in the country, at about 68 cents per gallon, and a good distribution network. There are substantial Utah and federal credits for those purchasing CNG vehicles.

ev-test-drive.jpg Our final stop was Brian Barrett’s garage. His garage is headquarters for E Volks/ Wilderness EV, where a variety of light-weight vehicles are converted to electric cars. We heard presentations about batteries, biodiesel, and hydrogen before some of us took test drives. “It’s like floating!” said one happy test driver.

Many thanks to our event partners: Utah Clean Cities, Questar, Net Impact BYU, Spanish Fork Wind Farm, Wasatch Wind, and E Volks/ Wilderness EV.
